Tour Diary 2001

12/15/01 Paradise, Boston:
The Queens make it to Paradise! That is one great club we hadn't played yet. We finally had our name up on the marqee. The experience? Stressful and full of little mishaps, but overall good. We opened-up for Chauncey and Stymie. It was an all ages show. It was a benefit for the Allston/Brighton food pantry--a good cause anytime of year, but especially important during the holiday season. Azalaya ended up in somewhat of a disaster... Chris, the man behind the mask, broke a bass string during the song, and by the end, we were somewhat lost, all playing something different. We did a little bit of "Here comes the sun" while Chris restrung his bass. What else. Christine's keyboard didn't work on the beginning of Naha, so we had to stop, and restart the song. We were also dealing with some strange feedback towards the end of the set. Adam recorded the show that night, so, tape will tell what really happened, and what was a product of our own imagination. But, we'll hopefully play there again. Anytime!

12/7/01 Newbury Comics, Cambridge:
This show will forever be remembered as the "flying pig AQM experience". This was our first appearance in a record store; all ages, non-smoking, non-swearing, bright neon lights, low volume venue. We set up our stuff in the back. Monte did sound for us. So here is what happenend. Right before the bridge of "We're the same", someone tried to reach for something up on a shelf, and accidently (or was it sabotage? Let's call the FBI) pushed down a big plastic big that flew right onto the mixing board, turning it off and knocking it over. We had to stop playing. I don't think we ever had to stop playing in the middle of a song at a show yet. That was really kinda funny. We just took the song from where we left off. That was a cool show.

12/6/01 Soundtrack, Boston:
X-Mas party, private party at Tamora's work. We played for about an hour, playing older songs that we hadn't done in a long time. It was a low volume setting. Still too loud for some, but much lower than usual. We also met Santa that night, and even sat on his lap. Mm, mmmm!

11/30/01 Sky Bar, Somerville:
Tonight was the third of our mini "Boston CD Release Party November Tour". This time, it was a party for The Alienist Outfit's new release. Great turnout--especially from the lovely city of Lowell- many new fans added to our growing base. And, what a small musical world it is...the lead singer from Temptress (headliners at our Meow Mix show) was there. We showcased another newly minted song, named "No One Else". It wasn't too shabby for a first time. Oh, and thanks to Monty who did sound tonight. Joel got stolen from us 'cause he was playing keys with Count Zero over at Bill's Bar. He had a blast for sure. We got home really late and a bit tired. Unfortunately, due to the release of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, our roadies were unable to assist in hauling gear up many flights of stairs in the dark.

11/25/01 Meow Mix, Manhattan:
Back in NYC! We had a good drive. Joel and Elyse came down with us. Traffic was much better than expected on a holiday week-end like this one, so we got there super early. We arrived around 4PM, and didn't end up playing until 9PM, which gave us over 4 hours to set up. The place was small but had a good vibe to it. The crowd wasn't very big, but enthusiastic, so that made it fun. Got lots of new people on our email list. Unfortunately, we didn't get paid---ah...the joys of breaking into a new market. We also got 2 parking tickets. Guess you have to put money in the meters on holiday Sundays in NY... We learned it the expensive way. Ended up driving back to Boston right after the show, and didn't get home 'till 7AM. A very tired AQM it was! If anyone is passing through CT on I-84 and stops at the Truck Stop at exit 71 don't leave without checking out the Walkin' Talkin' Lizard!

11/16/01 TT the Bear's, Cambridge:
Tonight was a show we've been looking forward to play for awhile. It was Reflecting Skin's CD release party, with Butterfield 8 and Annette Farrington. We had a great time on stage, really just shaking it up. The only downer was playing the opening slot, starting right at 9PM, when the crowd is only starting to show up. Our friend, Chris, filled in for Elyse as "Merch Queen" for the night, and Adam recorded the show. Our friend Philippe from the West Indies was able to watch the show on line at radioboston.com! That is so cool!

11/15/01 Radioboston.com:
We did our first AQM "folk-tronika" performance ever at radioboston around 5 PM. ZZZZZ invited us on his show. We really enjoyed hanging out with him. We played accoustic versions of "We're the Same", "Fit the Dress" and "Alive" and did an interview. It was a blast.

11/02/01 Linwood Grille, Boston:
Tonight was "Little a" 's CD release party. We played with them and Krank Squad. It was a really good vibe. The two new and still untitled songs are starting to feel much more fluid. The sound on stage was great. We could hear everything. Adam recorded the show for us.

Someone that was dining at the Linwood in recognised Catherine from her article in the globe a year ago, as we were loading... He was from her home town. He wanted to know all about the Capozzis in Waterbury.

10/31/01 WMFO 91.5 FM "On the town with Mikey Dee" Tufts University, Boston:
Halloween night, full and blue moon. That hasn't happened in over 40 years. It made our evening especially special. We got to play a whole 45 minute set. Joel mixed us and we got a good quality recording of the show. We ran into Mike Baldino again (we saw him just a week ago at the Green Room...). Small world. It also looks like we made it to the Hall of Fame at the station! What a "pleasant????" surprise to find our band picture pinned up in the bathroom stall... (that was the only picture in there, besides the usual bathroom poetry...) What that means we don't know. Either we sound like shit and that's where we belong, or they love us so much they need intimate time with us...

10/27/01 Green Room, Providence:
AQM hits Providence for the first time. Mistle Trush came down with us and played as well. This was a pre-halloween show, so we put on our wigs and party clothes. Christine was the Blue Lady, Chris the Birdman, Catherine the Tiger Woman, and Tamora the Purple Queen. We had a blast! We had Monty fill in on sound for us (Joel was busy). He did an amazing job. We'll hopefully be playing there again soon.

10/18/01 Linwood Grille, Boston:
It was a low pressure week night gig, so we made it a goal over the last couple of weeks to write two new songs and play them at that show. We accomplished it, which felt great. Joel did sound for us, on his birthday.... that was really nice of him. We had a review of Madame Static in the Boston Globe Calendar and were spotlighted on Boston.com. That's something that doesn't happen every gig. Christine's sister flew into Boston from Switzerland that same day and came to see the show. It made it extra special. Really enjoyed playing with "Car Crash Show". It would be cool to play a show with them again. We also got paid!

9/22/01 Middle East Downstairs, Cambridge:
This is the BIG awaited day! Our CD release party! Today we had the opportunity to be and celebrate with our friends. Considering world events, it feels like we need to live life and every moment to the fullest, that nothing but now matters. The show went really well. Big crowd, and a lot of love in the room. We did a cover of Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song". The whole night was great.

As part of the 20th anniversary of The Noise, T-Max put together "Thee Majestic Din Society" comprised of musicians and singers of the local scene from the past 20 years to perform the Beatles' "Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band" album. Bleu and Count Zero played as well. We always love playing with Count Zero. Will (Count Zero's guitarist) did our beautiful "Madame Static" as well as all the CD artwork. Many thanks to Joel (our live sound master), Adam Rosen (our webmaster and live shows "taper"), Steve Tackeff and Brooke (for snapping some cool pics of our set), Elyse (our merch mistress and hair queen) and lovely Cathy for helping us out with merch all night.

Memorable moments...
*Catherine getting in trouble with the bartender, as she wanted to get drinks without her ID, while Christine was getting served Alabama Slammers one after the other.
*Tam's cool purple wig and boa. mmmm baby! And Chris' flower power pants.
*Mom and Dad Gooding in the audience, all the way from Connecticut. What a treat!
*Cousin Keith, representin' for the Capozzi's.
*Yummy swiss chocolate at the merch table.
*Loading out the boozy way...

We'd like to thank everyone for coming out and celebrating with us. You made our evening very special.

9/15/01 Ralph's, Worcester:
This was a six song show. Short but sweet. It was a kick-off party for Locobazooka, which we thought might be cool to play. No pay, but at least we didn't pay to play... There were over 10 bands on the bill that night with no backline. It was a real zoo of equipment. The stressful thing was that Joel couldn't make it (and we do really NEED him!!!). But, without a soundcheck and with a soundguy that didn't know our music, it turned out pretty cool. With the events that happened in New York City that same week, it was good to just be together and play music...

8/16/01 Sky Bar:
We brought our own monitors for Tam's drums that night. It was much better to hear everything. Caroline took pictures that night, and Hans from Smithwicks in Lowell happened to be in the audience. Small world. January used to play that club, a bunch of years ago.

8/7/01 ACME Underground:
This was our first time playing the Big Apple with this line-up. We were really psyched to go play in New York. We left around 1PM. Joel drove down with us to do our sound, and Elyse to help us with the merchandise. It was soooo hot out! At least 100 degrees... Poor Tam had no AC in her truck. Elyse got to drive with her in the "sauna" truck. It must have been so awful...... We made it down, almost safely. Tam got one of her headlights smashed on the highway by some flying object...Amazingly enough, we found 2 free parking spaces right in front of the club. The show itself was a bit hectic. All our gear was in a hallway, and we just had 15 minutes to bring it on stage and set it all up. We got our set cut short. A friend from Boston, as well as a few NYC friends made it to the show. It was great to see them. We will be back in NYC. We drove back home the same night. Got home around 3am, exhausted.

8/5/01 Middle East Upstairs:
This was definitely our best show yet. Joel did an amazing job with the sound. We could hear ourselves really well on stage, and had a blast. The crowd was great. We would love to play shows with both bands that were on the bill with us that night. We didn't expect such a good turn out for a Sunday night. We also had "Madame Static" cds and t-shirts on sale for the first time. Yeah! Our cd is done! We had some special guests in the house: Christine's brother Jean-Philippe and his fiancee, Ina. They left for Switzerland the next day.

6/8/01 Abbey Lounge:
We're back at the Abbey playing with our friend Bo's band the Collisions (if you missed the night, you missed the part where he dropped his pants on stage... wohoo!), and local legend Rick Berlin. Our friend "o, o spaghettio" was in the house again. What a trip he is!! Rick Berlin said we should play raves. Sure, we would love to...

5/19/01 TT the Bear's Place:
This show was sold out by 9pm. It was interesting to play on a bill with 2 major label baby buzz bands, especially since most of our fans couldn't get in and that it was pretty obvious that the crowds didn't come to see us. Mistlethrush headlined the night, and rocked as usual.

5/9/01 Exposure:
Ok, ok don't be fooled by the name...it isn't the name of some "gentleman's club" on the North Shore. We were invited to play on a cable TV show. So we headed off down 128 to 495 to tape for future airplay. Cool set, cool people! We met Nathan (set designer/lighting person) and Shane, the host of the show, and their crew. We played "Fit the Dress" and "You Want Me", and had a little interview with Shane. It made us realize that we really need to work on our interviewing skills...what a bunch of stiffs on video. Joel came with us to do sound, and he saved us. Thank the lord for Joel!!! He rules!

5/3/01 Lilli's - Boston Rock Opera "Abbey Road":
Catherine and Christine were asked by the BRO to play in the performance of the Beatles' "Abbey Road", for the benefit of Mikey Dee. It was a really great experience. We got to hang out and meet a lot of new people from the Boston music scene. Christine sang "Here comes the sun". We usually don't get to play/sing with such a large group of people. That was really awesome, and a bit sad when it was over... there was definitely a lot of love in the room. We performed it twice, and they even brought Mikey Dee down to come see the first show.

3/23/01 Lilli's:
This was a show we were looking forward to for a couple months. We were really excited to play with Count Zero and Mistletrush. The night turned out awesome. We even got a write-up in Stuff@Night the day before. Lots of people showed up. It almost sold out. We made it our "spring show" and handed out flowers during "Little Things". That was cool. Ken Leach videotaped part of our show for the first time that night, and said he'd come tape us again. That is really great of him! Joel did sound, Adam was audiotaping, Molly and Elyse were also videotaping. People were dancing...it was a big party. The dressing room got flooded the day before, so we couldn't use it. Bummer. This show will forever be remembered as the "kurzi nightmare show". Christine's sampler broke down a week before the gig, and you can imagine the stress it was trying to figure out a way of getting it working in time for the show.... let's just hope it never happens again!

3/8/01 The Linwood:
It was freezing cold that night, and most reasonable people stayed home that night, except for the diehard AQM fans and some new fans we just met ... thanks to them for making the club warm for us. Joel Simches did sound for us for the first time. We also played the new song "Naha" that we had just finished the night before. Can be a bit stressful... we have to make sure we all end at the same time.

1/12/01 The Abbey Lounge:
The Abbey is a cool little dive. Small, small stage with red curtains. We couldn't play Azalaya at this show, because the vibrations of the music on stage were shutting the loop of the song off. Fortunately, we figured out at soundcheck that it was happening. We went on last and our set started late, but the club was kind enough to stay open a half hour longer and let us play our full set. We gained a new fan that night. As a matter of fact he was so enthused, he couldn't stop screaming.... "oh SHIT!!!!!!" "o, o, spaghettio", and ...."not too shabby at the Abbey". That was quite entertaining for us!
